What foods to avoid while taking quetiapine pills?

Quetiapine, commonly known as Seroquel, is an atypical antipsychotic drug that is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. While this medication can be highly effective in managing symptoms, it's crucial to be aware of the potential interactions between quetiapine and certain foods. These interactions can affect the drug's efficacy and lead to unwanted side effects.


 

1. Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice

Among all the food interactions, grapefruit is one of the most famous ones. This fruit and its juice can inhibit the enzyme CYP3A4, which is responsible for the metabolism of many drugs, including quetiapine, in the liver. When this enzyme is inhibited, drug levels in the blood can rise, potentially leading to an overdose or an increase in side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. It's advisable to avoid grapefruit and its juice altogether while taking this medication.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol should be avoided or consumed with caution when on quetiapine. The combination can enhance the sedative effects, leading to increased drowsiness, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.
